Christian Men and Marriage
The standard Ephesians 5 sets
Husbands, love your wives, as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her. — Ephesians 5:25. This is the highest possible standard of love: the love that goes first, that costs everything, that does not wait to be deserved. Most men know this verse. Very few live it consistently. Not because they do not want to — but because loving this way requires the kind of daily discipline, self-knowledge and spirit-dependence that most men have never been taught to build.
The most common patterns of failure in Christian marriages
Emotional absence
A man can be physically present in a room and emotionally absent from his wife. Physically home, mentally elsewhere — on the phone, processing work, managing the internal life he has never learned to share. His wife does not need another adult in the house. She needs a husband who is actually there.

Passivity
The passive husband waits for his wife to initiate — conversation, connection, the resolution of conflict, the spiritual direction of the home. This passivity is a form of leadership abdication. It places on her shoulders responsibilities that scripture gives to him.
Inconsistency
The husband who is loving on good days and reactive on hard ones is not yet a reliable leader. The standard is not occasional excellence. It is daily consistency — the slow, unglamorous, deeply impactful work of choosing his wife every day, regardless of the weather inside the marriage.
What it takes to be a better husband
- Know who you are first — a man who is secure in his identity in Christ is a man who does not need his wife to fill his emotional needs. He leads from fullness, not from deficit.
- Pursue her — ask questions and mean them. Put the phone down. Create regular, protected time that belongs to her.
- Lead spiritually — initiate prayer, scripture, the conversations about faith and family vision that shape the home’s culture.
- Confess quickly — the husband who owns his failures quickly and specifically is the husband his wife can trust.
- Build daily discipline — a man who cannot govern himself cannot lead his wife. The body section and the mind section of the Forged in Faith programme build the self-governance that effective husbanding requires.
