Understanding the Battle and Fighting It
The reality of spiritual warfare
For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places. — Ephesians 6:12.
Spiritual warfare is not a metaphor. It is not a primitive way of describing psychological processes. It is the biblical description of the actual reality in which Christian men operate. The enemy is real, his tactics are consistent and his primary weapon is deception.
The enemy’s primary tactics against Christian men
Identity attacks
The enemy’s most consistent attack is on who you believe you are. If he can convince a man that he is fundamentally flawed, fundamentally failing or fundamentally undeserving of God’s love, he has neutralised him without a fight. The man who does not know who he is in Christ is perpetually vulnerable to the suggestion that he is something less.
Isolation
Isolation is a strategic weapon. A man fighting alone is infinitely more vulnerable than a man fighting with brothers. The enemy works consistently to drive men into shame, secrecy and solitude — because he knows that connection and accountability are his primary threats.
Distraction
The enemy does not need to win a dramatic victory over a Christian man. He simply needs to keep him distracted — busy, entertained, comfortable and spiritually passive — long enough for the mission to go uncompleted. Social media, screen time, the tyranny of busyness: these are often more effective tools than outright temptation.
The armour of God — a daily operational kit check
Ephesians 6:13-17 provides a specific set of spiritual equipment. The belt of truth. The breastplate of righteousness. The shoes of readiness. The shield of faith. The helmet of salvation. The sword of the Spirit. These are not decorative — they are functional. They correspond to specific vulnerabilities and specific offensive and defensive capabilities.

Practical spiritual warfare for Christian men
- Know who you are — identity is the first and most important defence against the enemy’s primary attack.
- Stay in community — isolation is the enemy’s most effective tactical advantage. Counter it with accountability.
- Pray with authority — Luke 10:19 establishes the authority you have been given. Use it.
- Fill your mind with scripture — the sword of the Spirit is the word of God (Ephesians 6:17). An unarmed soldier is a vulnerable one.
- Guard your inputs — what you watch, listen to and allow into your mind shapes your spiritual sensitivity and vulnerability.
